Satisfactory Progress

Professional's Choice Hair Design Academy prides itself on being professional. Being professional means maintaining "satisfactory progress" during your training in our school. To determine if satisfactory progress is being maintained, evaluations are held through out the cosmetology programs. Cosmetology students must complete their programs within a 125% maximum time frame. Instructor students must complete their programs within a 118% maximum time frame.

Satisfactory progress in attendance and academic work is required for all cosmetology students enrolled in Professional's Choice Hair Design Academy.

Note: Students receiving funds under any Federal Title IV financial aid program must maintain satisfactory progress in order to continue eligibility for such funds.

Academic Progress

The following factors are used in determining academic progress. The cosmetology student's academic progress is based on the classroom and the clinic floor performance, as well as grades and evaluations.

Classroom (Theory) - Cosmetology Student

Students are tested after each chapter of study. The minimum acceptable passing grade on each test is 75%. (Your final school board test must be passed with an 85% or higher.) The following grading scale is used for classroom studies:

l00 - 90 = A Excellent 5 points
89 - 80 = B Good 4 points
79 - 75 = C Satisfactory 3 points
74 - 70 = D Unsatisfactory 2 points
69 or below = F Failing 1 points

Clinic Floor and Practical Work - Cosmetology Student

Progress books must be turned in on a regular basis and at the time of evaluations to determine if the requirements are being met. An increase in productivity must be shown during each time span of evaluations. Attitudes, appearance, client relations and general skills will be evaluated based on the following grading scale:

A Excellent 5 points
B Good 4 points
C Satisfactory 3 points
D Unsatisfactory 2 points
F Failing 1 points
I Incomplete 1 points

Students must maintain a C grade average (minimum of 75% in theory work and a C in practical/clinical work) in order to be considered as making satisfactory progress.

Classroom (Theory) - Instructor Student

Students are tested after each chapter of study. The minimum acceptable passing grade on each test is 75%. (Your final school board test must be passed with an 85% or higher.) The following grading scale is used for classroom studies:

l00 - 95 = A Excellent 5 points
94 - 90 = B Good 4 points
89 - 85 = C Satisfactory 3 points
84 - 79 = D Unsatisfactory 2 points
78 or below = F Failing 1 points

Clinical and Practical Activity Evaluations - Instructor Student

Clinical and Practical activities, for example, teaching class, will be observed day-to-day, based on activities scheduled for the day. Attitude, appearance, teacher/student and teacher/client relations will be evaluated, along with scheduled daily assignments, such as lesson plans, according to the following grading scale:

A Excellent 5 points
B Good 4 points
C Satisfactory 3 points
D Unsatisfactory 2 points
F Failing 1 points
I Incomplete 1 points

Two evaluations will be made per program to observe progress in each area.

1000 Hour Program Evaluations:
1st at 450 hours, 2nd at 900 hours

500 Hour Program Evaluations:
1st at 160 hours, 2nd at 320 hours

Instructor students must maintain a C (3 points) grade average on each evaluation in order to be considered as making satisfactory progress.
Determining Satisfactory Progress

Cosmetology students must achieve the required academic grade of 75% and the required 80% attendance to maintain Satisfactory Progress. Instructor students must achieve the required academic grade of 85% and the required 85% attendance to maintain satisfactory progress. Students meeting minimum requirements at evaluation time will be considered making satisfactory progress until the next scheduled evaluation.

Probation

Students who fail to meet minimum progress requirements in both academic and attendance will be placed on probation until the next probationary period. During probation, students are considered to be making satisfactory progress and financial aid funds will be dispersed to eligible students. At the end of the probationary period, the student's progress will be re-evaluated. If the student is meeting minimum requirements he or she will be determined as making satisfactory progress. If the student fails to meet minimum requirements, the student will be terminated from all financial aid and the tuition responsibility will become the student's.

Re-instatement of financial aid

Students who regain satisfactory progress will regain TITLE IV eligibility.

Appeals Process

Students who are terminated after failing to meet satisfactory progress may appeal their termination from the cosmetology program. The student must submit in writing a written appeal to the school's director along with any supporting documentation and reasons why the decision to terminate should be reversed. The director must receive this appeal within five business days of termination. Should the student fail to appeal this decision, the decision to terminate will stand.

An appeal hearing will take place within five days of the receipt of the written appeal. This hearing will be attended by the student, parent/guardian (if the student is a dependent minor) and the school's director. A decision on the student's appeal will be made within three business days by the school's director and will be communicated to the student in writing. This decision will be final.

Leave of Absence, Withdrawals & Temporary Interruption of the Program

Should a student find it necessary to be out of school for any length of time, one week or longer, a leave of absence should be documented in writing. It will be at this point that you will be considered for your leave based on prior attendance. 30 days is the maximum amount of time that you will be granted and only one leave of absence will be granted in a twelve-month period. Leave time will not affect your satisfactory progress. You will maintain the same satisfactory progress status that you had when you left.

Incompletes, repetitions and non-credit remedial courses have no effect on satisfactory progress.

The instructional staff and management at Professional's Choice Hair Design Academy provide counseling. We can assist you in improving your learning skills, preparing for examinations, and help with establishing working relationships with other students, customers, and staff.
